SO yeah, I almost forgot to mention I nearly lost *ALL* of my files the other day. My external harddrive seemed to lock up on me just before bed the other night. I was doing some work in Maya rendering out a scene and also downloading images from my camera to the drive when BAM- the drive is not formated, would you like to format now??
Uuuuuuuummmm no. No thank you give me my files back kthx.
So then I restarted the computer and still the same message. My heart sank--- it would mean I've lost all our family photo albums, all my work files, all my MP3s an accumulated 6 years worth of files- about 450 gigs worth- all down the drain.
So I had to walk away at that point, wondering how life would ever go on- I know pretty pathetic, but hey, it was all our family videos too =( so not THAT pathetic... It turns out the next morning, when I restarted the drive and computer, it took about 5 minutes to come online, but EVERYTHING was back.
So now, a few days later, I'm still archiving things saving to DVD's and transfering files over to my mac harddrives... OOOOYEESH, now thats alot of unwanted work...
K, rant complete... sleepy time.

Wow, that's a close call. I know exactly what you mean by "wondering how life would ever go on". It's not just data you're losing, but also memories. I'd probably feel the same way if my harddrive gave out or if someone stole my cd book.
