Comet Lulin

Well it looks like we may have a new visitor to our solar system. But don't expect it to hang around long... Comet Lulin was discovered by a 19 year old student in China in July of 2007, and we're likely to see it in the night sky from the 23rd through the beginning of March. Well at least those of us with binoculars...

http://www.universetoday.com/2009/02/24/how-to-see-comet-lulin/

On a sidenote, I find it fascinating that some comets have an "anti-tail" or ion tail in this one, that points in the opposite direction in which the comet is moving. You can see it in the above image as a bluish cloud on the right side of the comet. I wonder how that all works...

TED Talk: How Benjamin Button got his face

Let the World Pass You By

I think this article has a lot of truth wrapped up in it. I know I often times let the daily stress of life get the best of me, and with everything that needs to get done its very easy to stop breathing slowly. I guess part of that has to do with the "American lifestyle" and the dogged "pursuit of happiness" that we all seem to work so hard to achieve.

This article reminds me that its necessary, sometimes, to stop, breathe and just let the world pour in. I'm glad I started following this blog.

http://zenhabits.net/2009/02/let-the-world-pass-you-by/

Post written by Leo Babauta

I was sitting outside my new home yesterday (we just moved last week, and we love the new place), watching the world go by.

There were people in cars, in a hurry to get to their next appointment. There were birds flying by, insects just as busy as the people in cars, plants and weeds thriving in the humid Guam climate.

Inside the house, my children were also busy, as ever, making a mess of the house (which my wife and I would soon clean up), getting into things, their natural curiosity overpowering our previous pleas for them not to play with lotion or take things apart.

The sky was slightly overcast and there was a cool breeze, quite strong and pleasant actually.

It’s not often that most of us just sit quietly, and allow the world to pass us by.

Why not?

What is so important that it can’t wait until later? What email must be answered right this moment? Do we really need to read all those articles online, all those messages from others, all those newspapers and magazines? Do we need to have the television and radio and Internet on all the time?

Is life passing us by as we keep our minds super-busy? Are we missing out on the beautiful world around us as we constantly think about the future — what we need to do, our anxieties about what might happen — and the past — what we did wrong, what someone else did to us, what we said, what should have happened?

When was the last time you just sat, and observed? Why not do it today?

Magnetar

While the name might bear resemblance to an axe-wielding ork, I assure you we're not talking World of Warcraft here. Today's ramble is on a type of star called the Magnetar, thus named after its prominent magnetic field. Check it out:

http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2008/06/scientists-find.html
Of the 400 billion stars in our galaxy, only 12 are magnetars -- neutron stars possessed of a magnetic field a quadrillion times stronger than Earth's.

Make that 13. In an article published last Friday in Nature, researchers at NASA's Spitzer Science Space Center describe a newly-found magnetar called SGR 1900+14.

How big is a quadrillion, you ask? It's a million times a billion. As in, 1,000,000,000,000,000. Apply it to magnetic fields, and -- in the well-chosen words of this press release -- you get "extreme fields [that] stretch the very fabric of matter, contorting atoms into thin cigar-shaped structures."

Under that stress, the star's very crust can split open, temporarily releasing "over a thousand times more energy than all of the stars in a galaxy." That appears to have happened around SGR 1900+14; the break in the interstellar dust ring surrounding the star was likely caused by the flare shooting into space.
It appears that the theory of a Magnetar was first established in 1992. Here's another good article, this one from 1998:
http://science.nasa.gov/newhome/headlines/ast20may98_1.htm
On March 5, 1979, gamma ray detectors on nine spacecraft across our solar system recorded an intense radiation spike. It was just 2/10th of a second long - with as much energy as the sun releases in 1,000 years - followed by a 200-second emission that showed a clear 8-second pulsation period (most SGR bursts release as much energy as the sun releases in one year). The position tied the burst to a supernova remnant known as N49 in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

...

"We found that the pulsar was slowing down at a rate that suggested a magnetic field strength of about 800 trillion Gauss, a field strength similar to that for so called magnetars predicted by previous theoretical work," said Kouveliotou.

By comparison, Earth's magnetic field is a mere 0.6 Gauss at the poles, and the best we can sustain in laboratories on the ground is 1 million Gauss - and that's in a small volume. Normal radio pulsars reach about 1 trillion to 5 trillion Gauss, strong but still short of a magnetar.

"If the field really is this strong," notes Kouveliotou, "then magnetism itself can keep the star hot - about 10 million degrees C (18 million deg. F) at the surface - and power the X-rays coming from its rotating surface."

I remember watching Juan Enriquez speak about growing energy a while back, this talk is equally impressive.

Fleshing out Revy's story arch

So I uploaded a few more short stories I wrote a few years back. These are all part of my "Chronicles of Revy Daidros" series. It takes place in a fictional futuristic galaxy, in the world of Eve.

In the Rough and Tumble stories, I try to eck out some of Revy's more dangerous encounters. The Rush is perhaps my favorite. Ransom is definately one of the darker stories involving Revy, and though his name isn't mentioned in the story, the antagonists are after Revy's older brother Traimus.

More will be revealed about him when I have time to upload the other stories.

Chow for now!

Rough & Tumble: Ransom

“You think THIS is bad??”
The balding old Caldari man looks at her with an evil grin. He steps close to her and quickly backhands her across the mouth. The foul smelling man laughs and paces across the chamber, exuding a condescending aura.

“I can show you… WORSE!”

The sixteen year old girl looks weak, and is shivering overcome with anger. Across the room from her bound form, lies the body of a dead man. She didn’t know the person, only that he worked for Traimus on a few jobs. One of his crew perhaps, a dealer or informant? Just moments ago he had been talking over the neo-com and then two men burst in and killed him, brutally cutting his neck.

“What do you want with me?”
Revy yells, defiantly eying her captors.

“Why what everyone wants- money! And I’m sure he’ll pay it. You know why?”
The old man returns, stepping closer to her, getting right up in her face.

Revy moves her head in avoidance, trying desperately to get away from him.

“Because you’re just so PRETTY!”
The man sniffs moving his head up around her hair. His filth infecting the air she breathes. He grabs her hair and pulls her head violently against the back of the chair.

The last thing she hears before she blacks out is drugged up pathetic laughing.

-~-

“Pack it up! Leave the girl, I’ve given her enough crash, she’ll be out for days, if she even survives!”
The large dark skinned man enters quickly, yelling out the order to three men in the adjacent room.

“So we have the money then!?”
The overweight Caldari man yells angrily.

“Yeah, better yet, we also have his coordinates! Bos’ Terag has him scrambled not far from here. He’s called for us. Looks like he was coming for her. Hah! That is until Bos found him out!”
He returns, looking down at the girl.

The Caldari man nods, then shifts his gaze back to his subordinates. He motions for them to take her before he steps nearly into the tall Serpentis leader

“Instructions were clear- the girl lives! Now get to your ship you lazy overweight slime!”
He spits the last remark into the air at the overweight drugger, obviously angered by his disobedience.

The men leave the destroyed room quickly, and never return.

Rough & Tumble: Chasing the Prize

“Its four hours later than I would have liked… I’ve been cooped up here for too damn long Ertroli. It’s not like me to sit around like this. But the prize… It’s worth me waiting a bit longer.”
She whispers into the transmitter.

Revy Daidros looks out across the dense asteroid belt. She wears a dark black C.E.E.S. or Combat Enhanced Efficiency Suit, and looks more like she’s part of a ground recon unit, than one operating inside a ship. Several pouches and clasps line the form fitting blast-proof suit, and two high density plasma rifles lie in wait on either side of her belt.

“There are six here presently. I believe we’ll see it again soon. They’ve been at these roids for quite a while. Dinner set Ertroli?”
She speaks through the transmitter, then begins to check several of the ships onboard systems.

“Yes. We.. ready he.. Waiting on t.. mai.. course .. Rev...”
A mans voice returns, though static muffles it almost completely lost.

She adjusts several modules and temporarily mutes the communication channel. Outside, her ships cloaking device flickers with energy and the hum of the massive electronic field intensifies briefly inside the ship, reacting to space debris floating closer to the vessel. She again opens the communication channel.

“Alright, Tavis’Shel will think twice about stealing from me again…”
She whispers aloud with a smile on her face. The smile turns into sinister resolve when she spots the Occator.

“Here she is boys… You all ready?”
She says with too much enjoyment.

-~-

“What do you mean you THINK my ship MIGHT be attacked???”
The Gallentean man spits the phrase into the air with obvious frustration.

He is middle aged, has a head of thinning black hair, and wears opulent garb adorned with accessories. Standing in front of a greenish hologram, the agent displayed on it looks annoyed and very cavalier. A large window beyond the image reveals the inside of a sprawling station, the room probably three hundred feet above the stations main level. This is the only room in the Veltaris Ruse whose cost exceeds three million ISK a night.

The man on the hologram shakes his head in annoyance and returns, taking control of the situation:

“Let me put it this way chopps… You paid me for information, I’ve given you information. Yeah she’ll be attacking the Blood Paige, no doubt of it. In fact I bet she’s doing it right now. Hah! Ooooh, that look on your face is too priceless… Hey thanks again for the cash. And for your enjoyment, I’ve prepared a little vid for you. Chow you slimy bastard.”

The informant laughs back at the man, and smiles wickedly. He winks and gives him the finger before hacking the feed.

The hologram hisses and nearly cuts out before revealing a new image. This one shows the Blood Paige, a heavily damaged Occator surrounded by three other ships, an Arazu, an Eris, and an Enyo. The pale green light of the hologram doesn’t do the image justice, the glow from the sun behind the ships drowns out nearly every other detail. Save the fire now consuming the propulsion unit of the ship.

“Uaahhhhhhh! No no no no no… You… why… AAHHHHHHHH!”
The man steps forward and yells at the image, overtaken with anger and fuming with emotion.

Revy Daidros then appears over the transmission. A smile of enjoyment on her face.

“Tisk tisk tisk. Tavis. My wretched friend. Did you really think you would get away with it?”
She says.

“You bitch!! If you-”
He screams in spite.

“What!? If I’ve unloaded your precious slaves? If I’ve made sure they were going somewhere other than your pathetic prison facility on Mya V? If I’ve confiscated all ore your men so graciously mined for me this night? Settle down settle down… I haven’t taken all of it. In fact you can have the Omber. It’ll probably be here in the Paige’s wreckage!”
She laughs through the last part of the transmission, and then waves good bye while biting her lip.

The transmission is transferred quickly back to the Blood Paige, whose damage has become too much for it to move. Crippled, the fires rage in it for many moments before the ships heavy capacitor cell erupts in a massive explosion. The transmission then flickers out.

“DAIIIIDROS!”
The man yells out in furious hate.

Rough & Tumble: The Rush

“You’re sure this is the place?”
A female voice mentions uneasily over the com-link.

“Oooooh yeah it is… You just wait.”
She replies with obvious pleasure in her voice.

Revy Daidros sits comfortably at the helm of her silent ship, her feet up and chair leaning far backwards. Her face and arms are illuminated by the pale murky white glow of the consoles in front of her. The beautiful Inaki woman gazes absentmindedly at first, out into the seemingly limitless depths of space. This is the place, she grins playfully as she twirls that phrase around her mind, dissecting it- pulling its meaning apart almost as voraciously as a slave-hound rips its next meal. Her mind contorts at the sudden violent thought… well where did that come from, she wonders.

Two small ships lie in wait, about ten kilometers out from each other. She peers down into the monitors at her sides, reading the data. Her left brow raises and a small grin pierces her thin red lips.

“Yes… that’s right, just a few more moments now…”
She mouths almost inaudibly, anticipation welling inside of her.

Outside the angled windows of her Daredevil, the suns light becomes brighter and brighter. A planet slowly moves out of its way revealing red-orange light. It floods the entire ship in a split second, and Revy wills the visor closed around the main window of the ship to compensate for the sudden blinding glare. Upon the icy planet far below them, a planetary storm wages. Thick bands of toxic cloud circle and writhe, creating a maelstrom of fury upon its surface.

“Alright… Just another minute or so, come to my position, you’re a little too close Tria.”
Revy says checking her gauges a final time.

“Now be ready, and do hang on. Make sure you’re secure and strapped in- and your tray tables are in their upright position.”
She giggles into the com-link.

“Yeah yeah… hey do you think we should be doing this..?? I mean…”
A sudden moment of doubt fills Tria, hinting that Revy reconsider.

“Too late for that! Hang on!”
Revy practically shouts into the com-link. Sensors aboard her ship light and begin tracking a very large object, headed in their general direction very fast, almost losing the link, she manages to grab hold of the objects trajectory.

Instantaneously and way too close for comfort, a comet streaks furiously by their position, only thirty kilometers out, simultaneously, a large explosion rocks the surface of the adjacent planet as a second comet barrels at thunderous speeds into the raging planet below. Within a second the comet that avoided the planet is already more than one-hundred kilometers out.

“Alright, I’ve got it… Here... we GO!”
Revy shouts out the last phrase as her ship propels into a dizzying warp.

Thru comet dust and clouds of microscopic minerals their ships furiously race to catch up with the speeding comet. They can barely see thru the glass of their craft, the ships warp drive compensating dangerously on the unstable object. For many minutes the two pilots are enthralled and in awe as the ships drive pulls them closer towards the comet, who’s speed is just fast enough to allow them to slowly catch up.

“Aaaaaaaahhhh!”
Revy yells in glee as they pass dangerously close to the systems star, and then beyond it, her ship slowly losing grasp of the warp bubble. The experience is almost hypnotic, being pulled into the comets silvery wake, and she closes her eyes for the last few moments while the ship slows to a halt as the drive loses power, leaving Tria’s far behind her.

“God that’s a rush…”
She says falling back into the seat of her chair, exhausted. Propping her legs up, she turns the ship and begins to travel slowly back towards Tria, now several hundred kilometers away.

“I think I won… Fifteen kilometers! Did you see that…!!”
She says playfully with excitement.

“God… Its amazing… You and your tricks Revy, dad would be proud!”
Tria says back, pride in her voice.

Martian Sunset

I caught this APOD a few weeks ago. Apparently the red planet doesn't always appear red! This gorgeous shot was taken by the Spirit Rover in May of 2005. The colors have been shifted slightly to show what it might look like from a human's perspective.

Catch the original post here: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap090110.html

Our Pups

So when I was a kid, my sister and I never had the pleasure of owning a pet. Well okay, thats not entirely true, I did keep a turtle for about 3 weeks before I had to give him to the zoo. It turns out that Michaelangelo was actually Michaelangelette and had babies while there. So it turned out better in the end. Haha. Now, looking back, I know why my parents didn't like the idea of pets, but as I grew up I couldn't help but feel like it would have been really nice to own one.

So when Ashley came home with a little rescue from the Petco in Orlando, I was really excited. Back then his name was Truman, and we could tell he had up until that point, had a very hard life. When we took him in he suffered from Heart Worm, his hair was falling out, and he was extremely malnourished. They were going to euthanize him only a week after Ashley saw him.

Instead she convinced the caretakers at Petco to take on the treatment costs, and in exchange we would nurse him back to health and provide a good home. Now, nearly six years later, he's our twinkie on stilts, and one of my best buddies.

Meet Taylor.

IMG_5107

Madison's story is somewhat similar, though she was much more healthy when I took her in. Like Ashley did for me a year earlier, I decided that I would get a dog for Ashley. Besides, Taylor needed a playmate at home. Back then we were going through school and it was apparent that we were both away from the house for much of the day.

So I headed to Petco, the same one she found Taylor at, and I started looking about. They sure had a bunch of dogs there, and most were well groomed and had playful temperaments. I chanced a look to my right, away from all the commotion and saw a few cages near the back. There were three dogs that were penned up, and no one was paying attention to them. I happened to stop in front of Madison's cage and decided to see if she'd warm up to me.

Now they didn't have her name printed anywhere, so I had no idea what she was called. She crawled up into my lap, and I could tell she hadn't been washed in several weeks. She was uncomfortable in her own skin, but I knew she was happy to recieve some affection.

I decided then that she'd be coming home with me. Now the funny thing was, Ashley and I had planned several weeks earlier, that we were going to move to Madison when we were finished with school. We had even begun to pack boxes up in the apartment.

So I recieved the paperwork and began to sign it, then asked: by the way, what is her name? I was stunned- her name was Madison.

The Drake Equation

This equation was created by Frank Drake back in 1960. It attempts to estimate the number of extraterrestrial civilizations that might exist in our Milky Way galaxy.

Here is the Wiki article: Drake Equation

The equation states that the number of civilizations in our galaxy with which communication might be possible (N), is equal to:
  • the average rate of star formation in our galaxy X
  • the fraction of those stars that have planets X
  • the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets X
  • the fraction of the above planets that actually do go on to support life X
  • the fraction of the above planets that go on to develop intelligent life X
  • the fraction of those civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signals into space X
  • the length of time those civilizations release signals into space
Of course, this equation really is more of a guess and its variables are pretty tough to quantify. Because of this, the equation is subject to increase scrutiny. Obviously it is meant as a benchmark to better define the variables that might be needed to harbor intelligent life as we might know it. And as such, I find it extremely intriguing.

When he first proposed this equation, he suggested the following numbers for the variables:
N = 10 × 0.5 × 2 × 1 × 0.01 × 0.01 × 10,000 = 10
So he suggested in 1960 that the estimated number of civilizations that currently exist in the Milky Way galaxy to be 10. Current estimates in this equation have been proposed as such:
N = 7 × 0.5 × 2 × 0.33 × 0.01 × 0.01 × 10,000 = 2.31
Pretty interesting, and for me at least, this number seems to be really low... But then, I'm no scientist.

Eagle at Fritse Park

So I heard recently that there are an estimated 25 Eagles nesting near Fritse Park in Neenah, only about 20 minutes away from where we live. This weekend I took an hour to see if I could catch a few images of the birds.

Apparently both the Bald and Golden varieties are represented in those present, but unfortunately for me, I only saw one while there. Here are a few of the pictures I took while there...

The Oceans Thermal Promise

http://www.earthportal.org/news/?p=2165

This article really made me think. Especially this:
The basics are well-accepted. With 23 million square miles of surface area — 70 percent of the Earth — the ocean is the world’s biggest sunbather. The amount of heat it absorbs each day is equal to burning hundreds of billions of oil barrels. Tapping into even one-tenth of a percent of that energy, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory says, would yield...

...20 times as much electrici
ty as the United States uses in a day.
Further down in the article:
In either case, OTEC offers something that few renewable resources can — baseload power. While wind and solar are known to be fickle, ocean thermal backers say it can provide hundreds of megawatts every minute of the day.

Lol, I thought I'd seen it all.

Orion's Belt

Orion's belt is easily spotted in the night sky. From left to right, the stars are named: Alnitak, Alnilam, & Mintaka. I had no idea the Horse Head Nebula and Flame Nebula were that close to Alnitak...

Today's APOD is shown above, unlike the first image, this was taken with a digital camera affixed to a telescope, and so the colors are a bit more what you'd expect to see when looking through a telescope.

I'll never look at Orion's Belt in the same way. In fact, this might be a good spot to train the telescope this summer...

Coma Galaxy Cluster

I think I chose the wrong profession, because this is JUST BRILLIANT. It is simply staggering the amount of galaxies revealed in this shot. And to think... in our galaxy alone there are an estimated 400 BILLION stars. The older I get and the more I learn about the cosmos, the harder it is to believe we're the only ones out here.

The world is rioting... Why aren't we?

I thought this was a very interesting article...

http://www.alternet.org/workplace/124836/the_whole_world_is_rioting_as_the_economic_crisis_worsens_--_why_aren%27t_we/?page=1

To quote a few paragraphs:

Over the past few years, a series of riots spread across what is patronizingly known as the Third World. Furious mobs have raged against skyrocketing food and energy prices, stagnating wages and unemployment in India, Senegal, Yemen, Indonesia, Morocco, Cameroon, Brazil, Panama, the Philippines, Egypt, Mexico and elsewhere.

For the most part, those living in wealthier countries took little notice. But now, with the global economy crashing down around us, people in even the wealthiest nations are mad as hell and reacting violently to what they view as an inadequate response to their tumbling economies.

The article continues by citing specific cases of unrest in several countries including Greece, Latvia, France, Iceland, Britain, and Russia...

Notably absent from the list of countries where the economic crunch is rending the social fabric is the good ole US of A, a state with the greatest level of economic inequality in the wealthy world.

Outside of a few scattered and quickly contained protests, the citizens of the U.S. -- a country born of revolution, but with an elite that's been terrified of that legacy since immediately after its founding -- have been calm, despite opinion polls showing that Americans are more dissatisfied with the direction in which the country has been headed since they began measuring such things.

It's a baffling disconnect, considering that real wages for all but the top 10 percent of the economic pile haven't increased in 35 years.

Centaurus A

This is a spectacular shot of galaxy Centaurus A. This galaxy is the 5th brightest in the sky, and we're seeing it edge on. The jets seen below are being expelled from the center of the super massive black hole are in x-ray and radio wavelengths at about half the speed of light, or about 150,000,000 meters per second...

We have the "Planet Earth" dvd's and I'm always reminded of the piece on Polar Bears. Anyways, I wish things were different in the world, it makes me sad to think that the world my kids will inherit is a far different world compared to the one in which I grew up. One can only hope things will change and soon.

Anyways its late and I'm uncharacteristically depressed about the subject. Lol time for bed!
